Dr. Bloch's patented Brick Method allows poor readers to immediately identify words without emphasizing phonics, sight reading, picture books, or verbal cues. His system works super fast because it does not have any complicated rules for students to remember, as needed in other reading programs. Essentially, his method is based on students' understanding that words are constructed of different-sized letter bricks, just like toy models can be built from different-sized colored bricks. Dr. Bloch's clinical research shows that if a poor reader can assemble toy bricks to build a model structure, they will be able to read both familiar and unfamiliar words without difficulty.

Dr. Bloch uses a specific set of drills to teach poor readers a finite set of letter bricks and how those bricks are used to build words. Once a reader knows their letter bricks and how to construct and deconstruct words using those bricks, they can pronounce about 90% of the English language correctly. Incredibly, this process works even if the reader hasn't seen or heard the words before. The beauty of this system is that it makes poor readers realize that words are not just built from 26 letters and 26 sounds (or one-unit bricks). It also teaches them how various letter bricks are categorized and remain unchanged when used in different words, just as a 2- or 3-digit red toy brick remains the same whether it is put in the model car or the model dinosaur.

Students become master word builders and readers much the same way they do using toy bricks. There are no written instructions for this process. They simply need to practice drills putting letter bricks next to each other step by step in a specific order and configuration. Just like a kid turning each page in the illustrated guidebook on how to build something from toy bricks. Each page shows another brick of a certain color and size being added in the right order. At the beginning, the builder needs to see every page to find out which brick comes next. But after building the same toy multiple times, they don't need to see every page.
